Disney released the first trailer for its upcoming live-action version of an animated movie last July 8, 2019. The remake of the film is based on the 1998 animated film Mulan directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft.
The new live-action film will take the story back to its roots to focus on a Chinese young woman Hua Mulan (Liu Yifei) the eldest daughter of an honored warrior Hua Zhou (Tzi Ma) a strict war veteran. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Mulan disguises herself by posing as a man among the troops thus taking the place of her ailing father.
Chen Honghui who becomes Mulan’s most important ally and the eventual love interest is played by the actor Yoson An from New Zealand. In a twist from the original animated film, the remake will feature some new characters. The film also stars Donnie Yen (Rogue One) as Commander Tung, Gong Li as Xianniang, a character not seen in the original animated film, and Jet Li as the Emperor.
The new “Mulan” will be directed by Niki Caro, who recently directed “The Zookeeper’s Wife.”
Mulan will be released in theaters on March 27, 2020.
