SEAMEO-INNOTECH conducts forum on cybersafety of Filipino learners

The Southeast Asian Minister of Education, Organization, Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO-INNOTECH) organized a knowledge forum on the cybersafety of Filipino learners last May 27, 2019 attended by representatives and stakeholders from various sectors.

Center Director of SEAMEO INNOTECH gave the opening remarks followed by an overview of the forum. Keynote speech was given by Usec. Josephine Maribojoc from the Legal Affairs of the Department of Education, stressing the need for the responsible use of the internet among Filipino learners nowadays.

A discussion on data privacy in support of a cybersafe environment was given by Atty.Erlaine Vanessa Lumanog from the Privacy Policy Office of the National Privacy Commission. She expounded on the privacy rights of Filipinos and covered issues explaining when and when not to give personal information both online and offline.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ysrael Diloy, Senior Advocacy Officer of Stairway Foundation, Inc. spoke on cybersafety discussing research results and experiences and lessons learned from their exploratory efforts.  He also discussed how children are victimized by online grooming tactics initiated by anonymous culprits online, afterwhich, cybersafety interventions were introduced and explained.

A workshop was conducted after the talks, enabling participants to group themselves and contribute to the creation of strategies for a cybersafe learning environment.   Facilitated by Dir. Abraham Y.C. Abanil representing Dep.Ed’s Information and Communications Technology Services and Mr. Benito Benoza, Manager of Knowledge Management and Netwroking Office of SEAMEO INNOTECH,  all the groups were asked to present and discuss their output and proposed solutions in the afternoon.

Handouts, modules and links to resource materials for cybersafety were all introduced during the forum. Participating sectors from the academe, various organizations and cause-oriented groups gave their commitment in helping promote a cybersafe environment for Filipino learners.
