DIPOLOG CITY, Zamboanga del Norte, Feb. 10 (PIA) – The sporty City of Dipolog takes center stage as it hosts the Mindanao kick-off activity of the 16th National Dental Health Month celebration with a fun run dubbed “Run Away from Sugar”.
About 300 health enthusiasts and oral health warriors from the different parts of Mindanao joined the activity to promote oral health awareness among Filipinos as well as help in lowering the caries index prevalence in the country.
Dr. Stephen Almonte, national president of the Philippine Dental Association said the Philippines has a high prevalence of dental caries or tooth decay, second only to Vietnam in the world.
He said the main culprit of this is SUGAR! Thus, they adopted the title for the fun run activity as is.
“This is the reason we are promoting the importance of maintaining good oral health for all ages and sectors of the society,” said Dr. Almonte emphasizing mouth health as a priority.
As for tips, he shared everyone should practice the “Pitong Utos sa Epektibong Pagsisipilyo” (7 commandments of proper tooth brushing).
These are: Looking into the fluoride content in toothpaste, as it varies in requirement per age; the same with the amount of toothpaste used in every brush; proper tooth brushing techniques and its duration; not gurgling water after every brush to get that maximum fluoride; and frequent morning and night tooth brushing routine.
With all these, he reminded us to eat healthily and regularly visit the dentist.
“Looking after your oral health is a matter of mindset. Behavioral change is important. Laging bumisita sa inyong mga dentista at hindi kung kailan may nararamdaman ng sakit. Make it a priority,” he stressed.
The observance of NDHM started in 1951 as National Dental Health Week, later expanding into a month-long celebration on February 24, 2004, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 559. This year’s theme is “Unite for Mouth Health”. (NBE/EDT/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
