Leading Abra bets ask Comelec to proclaim early, avoid agitation

By: Liza Agoot

BANGUED, Abra — Lawyer Estelita Cordero, counsel for the ASENSO party, which consists mostly of candidates leading in the provincial canvassing here has filed a written petition asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Abra to hold a proclamation soon.

Cordero is representing gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Bernos, congressional bet JV Bernos, vice gubernatorial bet Ronald Balao-as, and the entire ASENSO party.

“There were already 24 municipalities whose results have been canvassed, which is 94 percent of the total votes cast. The remaining votes will not in any way change the result of the elections,” Cordero said before members of the media after filing the written petition at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

The petition also asks the Comelec to lower the threshold of 100 percent and declare the winners for the position of the governor, vice governor, congressman, and provincial boards.

From the remaining three municipalities,  Malibcong, Tineg and Lacuba, a total of 9,129 votes will be canvassed.

She said that as early as Monday evening, they have orally manifested their request for a proclamation, but the Comelec has asked them to wait for more time. At that time, the provincial board had only canvassed more than 80 percent of the votes in the province.

Cordero said that holding a proclamation early, will not change the results, but could make a difference in the peace and order of the province.

“The further delay in the proclamation might agitate things,” she told the electoral board of canvassers while submitting the petition. (PNA)
