Last July 2, veteran actor Mel Martinez has been hospitalized at the Cardinal Santos Hospital due to acute tonsillitis that he got from bacterial infection and has been receiving antibiotic treatments.

Tonsillitis is most often caused by common viruses, but bacterial infections can also be the cause. Acute tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils that frequently occurs in combination with an inflammation of the pharynx (tonsillopharyngitis). Acute tonsillitis is characterized by the sudden onset of fever, sore throat, and painful swallowing. Tender, swollen cervical lymph nodes and tonsillar exudates may occur.

Mel Martinez got discharged from the hospital last July 5, and on his Facebook post, he thanked everyone who visited him there. “Don’t worry, the TIGER IS REALLY STRONG,” he said as a sign that he was back to his healthy self.

Mel Martinez is also known as Joaquin “Wacky” Dumagat in one of the casts of most-watched afternoon program “Kadenang Ginto” on ABS~CBN.

Martinez shared that his illness might have been work-related.

“I guess overworked din, pag puyat ka kasi bumababa ang immune system lalo na sa work ko (actor, businessman, chef), marami akong nakaka-usap, syempre kung minsan hindi natin alam kung sino ang may virus. Pag mababa ang immune system mo, madali kang mahawa kaya it’s good to take your vitamins, exercise, and have enough sleep to combat illnesses .” Martinez said.
