The College of Communication on its 18th year foundation celebration, with its chosen theme Mental Health, will be having its convocation program this coming July 24, with Senator Risa Hontiveros, Dr. Sheila Marie Hocson and Fr. Stephen Mifsud as convocation and plenary speakers at Bulwagang Balagtas, NALLRC of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
Sen. Hontiveros is known as a fervent advocate and messenger of hope for the numerous mental health professionals, persons with mental health concerns, students and young people who have lent their voice for her landmark legislation.
Another speaker, Dr. Sheila Marie Hocson, president of the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association (PGCA) is a guidance director, accreditor, human resource practitioner, consultant, author, educator and also an advocate of mental health.
Meanwhile, Fr. Stephen Mifsud was the former University Chaplain of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and also an advocate for mental health, with programs addressing the spiritual and moral well-being of young people.
Last January 22, a signing ceremony of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of RA 11036 authored by Sen. Hontiveros was held at the National Center for Mental Health. A publication of said IRR in two general circulation newspapers made last February 4, marked its date of effectivity.
The theme was chosen by COC due to the prevalence of depression problems and mental health issues among the student constituents. The concern is being addressed through academic and co-curricular efforts and the possibility of collaborating with advocates and other agencies.
