Cantate Domino, Canticum Novum: Himig Undaya’s Maiden Concert

By: Marion Kohchet-Chua, STC Batch 1983; Christine Marie Lim Magpile, STC Batch 1998

Himig Undaya, the alumnae chorale of the St. Theresa’s College, Quezon City (STC, Q.C.) will have its maiden concert entitled, “Cantate Domino, Canticum Novum: Sing to the New Lord a New Song.” The concert will be held on November 23, 2019 (Saturday at 7:00 p.m.) and November 24, 2019 (Sunday at 3:00 p.m.). The venue of the concert will be at the Grade School Chapel of St. Theresa’s College, Quezon City, 116 D. Tuazon St., Q.C.

The name Undaya was inspired by the word “unduja” which means warrior princess.  The ICM nuns who have set up and run the school until now embody brave women with a strong commitment to their mission in bringing a Catholic education in different parts of the country.

Himig Undaya envisions to use music as an expression of faith, bringing to life the Theresian values of service and humility. When Himig Undaya sings, it expresses narratives through songs, hoping to touch the lives and hearts of those who hear them. (Photo courtesy of STAA)

At present, the choir has twenty-two members. Three of its members are music professionals. Himig Undaya’s musical director, is the renowned choral conductor, Janet Sabas Aracama who is also the artistic director of the UP Concert Chorus and a professor from the UP College of Music. Meanwhile, Patricia Brillantes Silvestre is the chair of the Musicology Department and a professor as well at the UP College of Music. Aji Manalo, who heads the Performance Arts Committee of the Alumnae Association is a sound engineer, musician, and audio instructor at the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.

“My memories of STC Q.C. was exposure to quality and balanced academic education. During my time, music had an integral part in my life because I had excellent music teachers,” shared UP Prof. Janet Sabas Aracama. (Photo courtesy of the UP College of Music)

Apart from its maiden concert, Himig Undaya will also perform at the Ritmo Tribute Concert of the UP Concert Chorus on November 30 and December 1. Himig Undaya will have another audition in February 2020.

Through Himig Undaya, Theresians truly shine as outstanding performers and make their alma mater proud. Himig Undaya serves as a venue for Theresians to connect, engage, and use their talent to contribute to community works of the association. (Photo courtesy of STAA)
