All the 13 Filipino student delegates that competed from the Philippines brought honor to the country by winning awards from the Hua Lou Geng Golden Cup Competition held at Xiamen, China last Tuesday, August 13.
Nathan Mayer Dy and Ruzh Anthony Alfonso, both Grade 8 students from the Philippine Science High School – Western Visayas Campus bagged gold medal awards.
Meanwhile, Jacques Simon Timtiman and Ziron John Valaquio, both Grade 7 students from the Philippine Science High School – Western Visayas; Reginald Cedric Lim, Grade 8 and La Isabelle Gutierez, Grade 6, both from Grace Christian College; Charles David Tan Uy, Grade 5 from Bethel International School Palo, Leyte; Elaiah Asperin, Grade 6 from St. Jude Catholic School; Nathan Lucas Chiu, Grade 5 from St. John’s Institute and; David Matthew Dolar, Grade 7 from Paref Westbridge School all garnered silver medal awards.
Charles Joshua Tan Uy, Grade 7, from the Philippine Science High School Eastern Visayas Campus; Gerard Aureliano, Grade 8, from the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region and; Arielle Victoria Encarnacion, Grade 6 from Our Lady of Caysasay got bronze medal awards.
A total of 1,966 contestants from China, Taiwan, Hongkong and Philippines joined the competition under categories – Primary 5 and 6; and Secondary 7 and 8. Pinoy student delegates gained the respect of said Chinese countries for staying on top.
The competition was named in honor of Hua Lou Geng who was the first Chinese world-famous scholar who returned from overseas prior to the founding of the People’s Republic of China. He trained and educated many mathematicians of New China and his influence lasted for several generations.
The Hua Lou Geng Golden Cup is considered as one of the toughest Math Competition for Primary and Junior High Schools students in China.
