MANILA — A total of 13 people are vying for the positions to represent the 1st and 2nd Legislative Districts of Southern Leyte, and the 1st and 3rd Legislative Districts of South Cotabato in the special polls set on October 26.

Based on Certified List of Candidates released by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), three individuals have filed their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the 1st District of Southern Leyte, while five bets are looking to participate in the 2nd District of Southern Leyte.

Also, a separate Certified List of Candidates revealed that only one candidate filed for the 1st District of South Cotabato, while four candidates are looking to run for the 3rd District of South Cotabato.

The people who are running for the 1st District of Southern Leyte are former Southern Leyte (Lone District) congressman Roger Mercado and independent bets Vicente Geraldo and Albert Esclamado.

As for the 2nd District of Southern Leyte, those who will be competing for the post are Aniceto Saludo, who is also a former Southern Leyte (Lone District) representative, Miguelino Caturan, Napoleon Cuaton, Sheffered Tan, and Christopherson Yap.

On the other hand, Isidro Lumayag is the only one who filed a COC for the 1st District of South Cotabato.

The individuals, who are vying for the 3rd District of South Cotabato position, are former 1st District South Cotabato congressman, Pedro Acharon, Shirlyn Banas-Nograles, Abelardo Plaza, and Benjamin Rivera.

The filing of COCs was held from August 26 to August 28.

The campaign period started on Wednesday and will run until October 24.

The passage of Republic Act No. 11198 reapportioned Southern Leyte from one to two legislative districts.

On the other hand, Republic Act No. 11243 reapportioned the first legislative district of South Cotabato, which led to the creation of the third legislative district of South Cotabato.

After the laws were passed, the Comelec scheduled the polls for the said areas on October 26. (PNA)
